The John Jacob Menn family moved from east Texas in the 1840's to Wisconsin, settling in the Driftless region on Moore's Creek. Horses, then as now, were critical to the agricultural enterprise. Ben Menn, started our Angus beef herd in 1942. His son Jacob John Menn continued to expand the ranch and eventually handed the reins over to his son Jeffrey Menn. Jeffrey began breeding quarter horses over 20 years ago. It was clear his daughter Aurora was passionate about the ranch and horses. Today Aurora and her husband Gabriel Slattery, with their young family, continue the ranch tradition. They began Aberdeen Pastures Angus Farms LLC in 2012 raising and selling grassfed beef, commerical black feeders and organic crops. Over the years, the herd has grown to 400 cow/calf pairs. The Ranch consists of over 500 certified organic cropland acres and 2,500 acres of woodland and meadow pastures. Rotational grazing allows stewardship of the rolling hills and valleys and springs and streams that are the heart of the ranch and region.
Our horses are critical to the cattle operation for moving pairs from one paddock to another. They are trained to go through woods, hills, valleys, creeks, streams and even swamp. Sometimes cattle drives can go on for miles. The horses participate in multiple round ups each year. The horses are ready and willing to meet these challenges. Together they became interested in the beauty and ability of dun horses. Hollywood Jac 86 and High Brow Hickory and many other great sires and dams are the basis of their breeding program.
We have shown in AQHA, IBHA, WIFQHA and WFQHA. We are the only AQHA Heritage Ranch Breeder in Wisconsin and have sponsored AQHA Ranch Versatility Shows.
Morgan and Horse Training
We have known Morgan Rische-Murphey since she was just out of diapers. Her whole childhood was immersed in horsemenship. While still a wee child she was moving cattle on her pony Toro bareback. (see picture to the right). her skills kept developing and by her teens she began showing in APHA, NRCHA and AQHA under the tutelage of Monty Bruce and Luke Jones. After high school she worked in Colorado for the Rocken 3M Ranch training horses and Circle H Ranch a stocker operation running yearlings on BLM land. The beauty, family and friends called her home and she picked up where she left off at Devil's Hole Ranch Quarter Horses moving cattle and farming. She joined her sister Sarah in Texas for the winter of 2015 working for renowned 2 year old cutting horse trainer Gerald Alexander. Back again Morgan is ready to put her knowledge to work for you and your horse.
